Hi, ALL

Does anyone experience alot of palpatations, heart flutters and getting breathless easily ?????

I've had RA for 8yrs, and i am currently on MTX & Sulfasalazine. I have mentioned it to my docter but he just told me to lower my sulfasalazine down a little, which i have done and it's made no difference Sad

It's ridiculous because i can't do anything without getting out of breath. I had a heart scan 3yrs ago, which showed no signs of disease ????

I'm going to go back to the docters tommorow, it's getting me down & i'm starting to feel like a looney Confused

Hi there!

Yes- I get them too- mostly at night, sometimes with sweating.I don't get them very often though. Sorry- I've no idea if it could be due to RA, but you never know with the beast! or the drugs (I'm on the same as you). There can be other causes, such as anxiety, upset and stress, viruses, and I also read that anaemia can cause them. I'm anaemic- definitely due to RA. My husband had them as a delayed reaction after his mum died.

Don't feel that you're a loony though- these things are horrible, and you're right to go back to the doctor, to put your mind at rest. I hope you can get some answers. Let us know how oyu get on.

Take care

Maria

Hello , I used to get terrilble palpitations when i was in my mid forties and fifties , I didnt have RA then.
I was anxious at the time and had a lot of stress. When the stress went the palpitations stopped . You have my sympathy because they are awful.
I sometimes get an odd flutter but nothing really. I used to take Propanalol not sure if i spelt that right. It can be caused by many things.
Best always to be sure and get checked out could be the R A.

hello there!
Yes i started with palpitations some while ago-had all the usual tests etc. but everything was normal.
Then I started to get breathless really easily and my gp diagnosed asthma and gave me an inhaler. This really helped with the breathlessness BUT the breathlessness then disappeared as quickly as it came and i haven't had to use the inhaler for months now!
So basically although i can't really answer your question it looks ;like it may eithetr be the drugs or the meds!!!
I'm on MTX and Humira.

Could be anaemia too so maybe a lood test?
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hello!

Welcome to the forum, pleased that you have joined us. There is a wealth of information on the Forum collected from personal experiences so very useful.

I'm Lyn, diagnosed with sero-negative RA 22+ years ago and currently on Enbrel, Leflunomide, Naproxen and Prednisolone and a bucket load of pain killers, stomach protectors and amitryptilline! Have tried just about everything going and several surgical procedures along the way.

I was on methotrexate for 7 or 8 years but had to come off it last year due to neutropenia. I'm fairly sure palpitations are one of the known side effects of mtx. It can certainly lead to breathlessness. Definitely worth mentioning to the doctor but if no luck with your GP (sometimes they're not too au fait with RA drugs) contact the rheumatology dept at your hospital for some advice. It is always worth getting things like this checked out.

Hope to get to know you better. Do keep posting Smile

Are you taking a stomach protector such as Omeprazole or Lansoprazole with the meds? You mention that an inflamed gut was suggested some time ago. Methotrexate and other RA meds can be quite toxic and are known for causing stomach problems. Whether this might cause your other symptoms I couldn't hazard a guess!

Breathlessness or chest pain should always be investigated as this could be due to something like inflammation of the blood vessels which supply the lungs or a low grade untreated infection. It is sometimes recommended that methotrexate is stopped when you have an infection to allow the immune system to fight it. Positive thinking is great but I think maybe a medical opinion might be more useful as it has been going on so long.

Hope you feel better soon,

Hi,I've had palpations since my thirties,I'm now 64.I had heart tests done and it was found I had an extra systole(extra heartbeat). It's where the heart misses a beat and then does a flutter to correct itself which causes the flutter or palpation.I've never needed treatment for it and apparently it's quite common in athletes or when resting or under stress.According to my GP it's all to do with the electrical system of the heart. This was diagnosed years before I had RA so it was nothing to do with meds. I hope that you did get this checked out the palpatations are common but the breathlessness with it would be a worry. Would you let us know if you are ok please. Glenys.

Hi and welcome.

I have had them for a few yrs now. They came along originally with some other side effects from a drug. Mostly for me it is about steroids, stress and diabetes (of course the RA invades pretty much every body system too).

I had a 24 hr tape which showed although my heart gallopped off often the rhythm was even and that is the important bit.

Caffiene, too much sugar and other stimulants can effect things so watch your intake and get a diabetes check.

Hi

I have had the a couple of episodes of palpations and not sure where they came from.

Interestingly the night sweats someone told me that this is apparent when the disease is active. I am not sure if this is true or not but I burnt up last night and today I went for a ultrasound and although I said the RA was about a 2 today apparently there was a fire going on inside the joints and the doctor said it was active and moderate so I wonder is this just a conicidence or proof of the pudding. I

The whole thing is very annoying do the night sweats only happen to women with RA or do men get it too - I think RA and hormones linked - I suppose its all a chemical reaction.

Hope they find a cure soon...

Hey Mitchn,
I get palpitations too and a couple of years ago i got hooked up the the ecg machine for 24 hours for monitoring and all that (I looked like a NHS sponsored suicide bomber when i was going about my work for an 8 hour shift with wires poking out of my blouse and an alarm going off whenever the pads came loose!)
at the end of the day, (and after all the embarrassment of the wires and siren) they declared i was drinking too much red bull and thats what was doing it. do you drink a lot of coffee or anything?
